Below are some videos we find helpful in understanding what fracking is and the consequences of fracking, as well as some videos we either produced ourselves or are of ban fracking activists in Michigan.
We Should Leave (and Scenes from 2016 Michigan Frack Tour)
This 13-minute short by Michigander Colin Cederna begins with stories by his grandfather explaining how the gas and oil industry wanted the family property in Kalkaska for gas drilling but he turned them down. Cederna then joins ban fracking activists in Ban Michigan Fracking and the Committee to Ban Fracking in Michigan at several frack wells and injection wells in northern Michigan. Part of the 2016 Michigan Frack Tour. Features Crawford County resident Gary Cooley who lives near Beaver Creek frack wells and pipelines, attorney activist Ellis Boal, and LuAnne Kozma. Gas industry workers had been alerted to the event and were on site during the activists’ visit. The frack wells are on public state forest land. It ends with an inside look at an injection well in Kalkaska County.
Andrew Nikiforuk on fracking, Cochrane 2017 presentation
Andrew Nikiforuk, author of Slick Water: Fracking and One Insider’s Stand Against the World’s Most Powerful Industry, presents an insightful history and summary of Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking) in Alberta and North America. The theme centers on the story of Jessica Ernst, who is struggling through the Canadian courts to find justice after having her community of Rosebud’s water supply poisoned from fracking by Encana.
LuAnne Kozma on fracking, Ottawa County 2013 presentation
In July 2013, Ban Michigan Fracking president LuAnne Kozma gave a talk in Ottawa County about fracking and frack wastes. The other five speakers were gas industry connected and pro-frack and the Department of Environmental Quality’s Oil, Gas and Minerals Division’s current (as of 2019) chief, Adam Wygant.
Michigan Frack Activists Take Ban Message to New Heights
In 2013, in the midst of the Committee to Ban Fracking in Michigan’s ballot initiative campaign, activists brought the message to ban fracking to an overpass over Interstate 696 in the Detroit area.
Jessica Ernst: “Truth and Consequences of Fracking” presentation as part of Ban Michigan Fracking’s “Truth and Consequences of Fracking” in May 2012, in Traverse City. Ernst is a Canadian landowner who is suing the Canadian gas company Encana and the Canadian federal and provincial governments over the contamination of her land and water in Alberta. Ernst came to Michigan upon Ban Michigan Fracking’s invitation to share her story. She is the subject of a book by journalist Andrew Nikiforuk, Slick Water: Fracking and One Insider’s Stand Against the World’s Most Powerful Industry.
Kevin Heatley: “Woods or Wells?” Heatley’s presentation was part of Ban Michigan Fracking’s “Truth and Consequences of Fracking” events in May 2012. Heatley, a restoration ecologist, describes the ecological impact on forest ecosystems by the frack industry. This talk took place in Traverse City.
The Sky is Pink. This short trailer by Gasland and Gasland II filmmaker Josh Fox explores the propaganda machine behind the gas and oil industry that uses the tobacco industry’s playbook. It explains fracking well, and also the issue of contamination by well failure.
